Save Me a Piece of That Corn!

Dear Mom,

We are doing better health wise now. We have been able to kick the sickness and get back to work. The only weird thing is that I keep on getting really dizzy. We are working harder in this part of the world. We were blessed to have another baptism from less actives kids who we have fought for. Their stepdad is actually starting to show some progress. Now that he has seen us starting to help his kids, he has started to be less mean and showing more progress. We are starting to work on him getting married to get him baptized as well. The girl, her name is Odaly. She always looks mad. But when she was at home the next few days, she has been super nice to her whole family. When we had visited them after the whole amazing day. She has been reading the scriptures and helping out her mom more, who has chikungunya as well. Yes rain continues to fall. It gets actually kind of horrible. It really stinks because a guy stole my umbrella in the first few months here. And my last new one got broken. So I need to get another one, my body gets quite wet. But everything goes well. It really didn't hit me that grandma passed, until a few days ago. I do miss her a lot. I am glad that the mortuary did a good job talking with the kids. That was such a nice thing for them to do. Good job to Alesia for singing at the funeral. Have you guys seen the Meet The Mormons movie?I saw something on the church website. It looks really good. I miss you guys. I love you all.

Sincerely,

Elder Medina

Chikungunya

Dear Mom,

Tom, just got married? He's a beast I am so proud of that man. Mom, you and that hairdo. It's awesome. I almost didn't recognize you. You look good. Tom would hide his truck for the wedding. Lame! But funny that you got him back. Me and Elder Wyatt have something called Chikungunya. Or in other words (as elder Wyatts joke) a varieation of Malaria. It is horrible! I still feel dizzy. You get this nasty red rash and it itches forever!!! There is nice diarrhea, fever and vomiting and who knows what else. Your body hurts and it is impossible to sleep. Other than that, life is good. Two more baptisms next week! I am so sad about Grandma D. Elder Wyatt says, "hi "and sorry about Grandma. I have been failing this past week on writing in my journal because I have been so sick. But I'll get on that and get back to doing better again. I already miss Grandma D so much too. I love all of you guys. I still write to Tori every week. Lets see if I can still woo her when I get back in a year (wink, wink) I love you mom. Keep up the good work. Oh yea, even though we don't eat much, I have gained weight. I now weigh 147. I am getting fat! It turns out, running really did help me keep weight off all those years. Not being able to run has caused me to put the weight on. I'll have a lot of work to do to get back in shape when I come home. One more thing, we got to go Almond picking. It was pretty sweet!

Sincerely,

Elder Medina

Sometimes Missions are Hard!

(This post is from Mom)

In an effort to update family and friends I (Mom) decided to write this post. Sometimes missions are just plain hard! Since the one year mark, Elder Medina has had some struggles, as most missionaries do. I want to post his weekly letters, but some of the recent ones have just been sad, depressing or just too personal to share. I realize that many people read this blog, including future missionaries and their families. I also realize that I would not be doing any favors if I made the mission experience seem like roses and daisy's all the time. Looking back on it now, I wish that I was more informed and prepared as a mother, to help my missionary deal with some of the trials that he has had.  I in no way am saying that he shouldn't be serving, I am just saying that I wish I could have prepared him more for some of the rough patches that have come along. Hopefully this can be used as a tool to help you prepare, or prepare your loved ones who are planning to serve, or who might be serving and struggling. I believe that in sharing, no matter how hard it can be, we have the ability to teach and help others who may be in the same boat. Here are some of the areas that have been a struggle for Elder Medina, keep in mind that each persons trials are different from the next person and are unique to their situation and Heavenly Father's plan for them. And lastly, I wanted to document some of these trials, so that when he reads this, he can look back on them and see the many blessings that came out of them.

*Finances (this has been one of our trials) My husband and I were not adequately prepared for the cost of a foreign mission. It is hard enough to pay the monthly cost to keep a missionary out, but when they are serving in an area that is very poor and they seldom get fed, it can be draining on the whole family. If I could do it again, I would have stock piled a lot more money to help in this area. I am a firm believer in letting him live off of his monthly budget without bailing him out all the time. I also don't send a lot of packages, because it becomes too costly. Starting out, I didn't want to coddle him or make him too dependent on us by sending too many packages. I am learning now how much he still really needs to feel loved and thought of. I am trying to send more packages and letters when I can. I feel terrible guilt when I know he is hungry or in need of items that he can't find in El Salvador and we can't help him out, or when he goes to zone conferences and other missionaries pick up their packages and letters and he goes home empty handed.

*Illness- Elder Medina came down with a parasite soon after being at the Mexico MTC. He thought he was just sick, because he was trying to adjust to the food. After being in El Salvador for a short time he was taken to a medical clinic and tested positive for the parasite. This caused some tension with his trainer and him, because his trainer thought he was just being lazy and wanted to hide out in the bathroom. Turns out, he just couldn't get out of the bathroom ;) This continues to flare up and give him problems despite taking the prescribed medicine.

*Age- The day Elder Medina turned 18,  which was a Friday, he was ordained an Elder, went to the Temple the next day, had his farewell the following day and left the next week. He was very young when he left. We told him that just because the ages had changed, he did not have to go when he turned 18. He insisted that he wanted to go and looking back on it now, he has expressed that he should have waited. He says, he was in no way mature enough to understand just how hard a foreign mission would be. I'm grateful that he has matured enough to realize that.

*Companions- In his most recent email (yesterday) he talked about all of the companions he has had so far. He listed each of them by name and talked about the trials and good times that they have had.  Up until this point, all of his companions have been native (from Hispanic countries) He felt that some of his companions were very disappointed in him for being part Hispanic, and not knowing the language well or the customs. One in particular angrily pointed that out to him on a regular basis. Elder Medina is also a very happy, energetic guy. He has been excited about life since he was a little boy. He is excited about the gospel and sharing it!  He truly has a gift to see the positive in the worst of situations. If you do not have a similar personality, I'm sure that could irritate you. Essentially in his email yesterday, he felt that he had only made a deep rooted connection  and life long friendship with one of his companions since being out. He felt that all of the rest hated him :( He said that he has not been perfect and has tried hard to ask for forgiveness, humble himself and love each of them. He also said that he has been working on complimenting them instead of pointing out what they have done wrong, but still feels like the majority of them still don't care for him. This has been very hard for a guy who was friends with and loved by almost everyone in his High School. He is wondering what is wrong with him, which as you can imagine, breaks a mother's heart.

Ultimately our family knows that all trials are given by our Father in Heaven for our own good, even when we can't see it at the time. Our family has been blessed by Elder Medina and his service. As hard as it is, and as sobering as some of the pictures are that he sends home, I can truly say that I know he is where he is supposed to be, and I know he will look back on this experience someday with peace and happiness. He already has had so many great experiences and happy memories that have been made. We have faith and know that although it may be hard for him to see it right now, when the Lord is ready, he will show him why some of these trials were placed before him. We are experiencing and seeing with our own eyes, a young boy, turning into a man. The Lord loves him and he loves all of us. This gospel is true!

Smiling through trials is the best medicine!

Sick Companero

Dear Mom,

Do you remember when Elder Granillo was super sick and I had to stay in the house forever? That has happened again. Apparently, Elder Hernandez has chinkonguya. It is a knock off of dengue. Not too pretty. He's stuck in the house for 6 days. So what does that mean for me? Option 1 divisions, or Option 2 stay and die with him. He has been a trooper going through it all. I was talking to him last night, he tried the "I'm not sick" thing on me. But he's still got a rash all over and coughing and stuff like that. I broke down and already bought some facial cream a couple weeks ago. It helps a bit. I am glad that the running team's doing good. Is Emilio doing the water thing? He's got to live. I know that your mission activity will go on mom. Keep it up. Don't lose faith. I did get the birthday letters. They were really nice. Thanks. We are able to listen to music. As long as it's by the church we're good. I was sent a bunch by the Calamity family of the piano guys and lindsay sterling. A member just copied some hillary weeks (WOO HOO!) onto my memory. Keep on being a great lady. I love you all.

Sincerely,

Elder Medina

Wishing Well Service

Dear Mom,

This week was pretty ok actually. We had stake conference and we had to talk to members in order to bring people to church in their cars. But there was almost too many that we couldn't all fit in the van. We went to clean a well too. Did you know if you drop a pebble from the top of the well it could seriously injure a person. We were unable to get ourselves in the well. Being missionaries it is frowned upon in some parts to do so. Part of that service project we had to destroy a hornets nest. Not the best thing to do. We almost got killed by bees. We encountered several families who are wanting to learn this week. It has been a decent week. We were able to leave with members the majority of the time. We are planning a few activities to boost the ward unity here. Another Elder got hit by a truck today. Not too hard. Just a hard bump. He was able to laugh about it. He knocked over a guys tomatoe stand. The one thing that is pretty bad is, one of our investigators relatives has died. We haven't been able to get to them. However they did come to church. Which was pretty good. Another investigator that we found wants to get baptized. He can't yet, he's got to get his leg healed still. Another whose name is Jesus and his mom Julia. Are super nice. They actually are trying to bring friends to lessons so they can find out. I love you guys. Keep working hard back at home.

Sincerely,

Elder Medina

Birthday Week!

Dear Mom,
To start off, is Emilio eating enough and drinking enough? Because if he doesn't drink at least a liter a day, he's going to be like that every time he runs. I am sad that stuff is happening to him. But doing that, drinking more water or powerade will help a ton. Get him a BIG water bottle. Then have him fill it up before he leaves the house. If my blender bottle is still there give it to him. Have him refill it after EVERY period at school and DRINK ALL of it during the class. One bottle every period. Olivia's tearing it up out there. Great to hear that. Thank you for birthday wishes from you guys. This week an amazing experience happened. We had an investigator that we had just barely found. His name is Edgar Antonio Reyes. He had an accident on his motorcycle three months ago and has been bedridden for a long time. He still has approximately a year to go. He is so positive though. He accepted baptism the first lesson. He told us "yo no sé si yo voy estar en el hospital este día, si estoy no puedo, si no estoy, yo voy a poner una bolsa para cubrir mi pierna.." He's got a bunch of nails holding his left knee together. And they're visible too. Not the prettiest picture. But he wanted to go to church this weekend. He was a real trooper and through pain and screaming kids in sacrament meeting, he endured all of church and said that he loved it. He looked really happy still. A huge testimony builder for me. He can't walk, he really can't do anything. But he's still trucking it and doing what God wants him to do. I miss you guys, next week I'll have a surprise picture for you all too :). Not saying anything on what it is.

Sincerely,

Elder Medina

This Work is Hard!

Dear Mom,
Hmmm, that new hairdo on you sounds quite awesome. I know that Emilio will have fun in High School. He's a pretty outgoing kid. I did get the package.  I am just waiting until my actual birthday to actually use the decorations. Thanks for the advice for the breakouts.  I haven't gotten to the point that I am constantly hating my face. I am trying less and less to mess with it. But, it still haunts me, just the appearance. But, I am getting better at it.

Yes, I still am emailing Tori, she's tearing it up out there. She works really hard. I have been trying to find a mail place to send her a letter. She sent me a few. I saw that she still wears the necklace I gave her. That makes me feel  great!

With respect to my personal conversion. I have been working on myself at being better. I have been trying to apply the doctrine more and more in my life. It is hard, but it is rewarding. We have been trying to put baptismal dates on the calendar.  When we explain the Book of Mormon, and how reading it will help them decide, they usually commit to read or commit to baptize. Really it all depends on us being unified. We are really working hard on that lately. I am being more obedient, and have today, expressed some deep feelings and fears that I have been dealing with. So we'll see how we go from there. I have committed to do this work.  It is hard, but I said I would work hard when I accepted my call. Love you all.

Sincerely,

Elder Medina
